In addition to me love of technology I am a self taught student of the visual arts. I have dabbled in 3D art, painting, drawing, and photography. With my hands I never quite found I had the skill, however with my eye and a camera I found that I have something. I owe that skill to my father who has been a professional photographer as long as I have been around and that's 3+ decades. Together we teach each other about techniques and skill improvements and work off each other's experiments.
In partnership we have created NorthWorks Photography. The first chapter of this journey is a project my father, G.E. Koenig, started about a year ago. Through the subject matter, he was pulled into the darker side of life and the people who there. Sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down, it's all a cycle that everyone goes through. Coming soon is a book called Dark Cycle, which is a collection of Americans who are on the down side of this cycle. Many are like you and I. They owned businesses, were married, have kids, families, and got into a situation where they are down hard and working to get out back on track. NorthWorks Photography intends to show, albeit briefly, the human side.

There is something said about the human face. How much emotion can be stored in a look. For the book I love the cover, the top photo. That man's name is Terry. He had a business that went bankrupt and now is living in the streets of Las Vegas trying to get back on his feet. His gaze shows sadness, innocence, despair.

Throughout the galleries on the website are is a good sample of the other subjects used for the book, all with their stories, all with unique looks and character in their faces.

These feelings captured in the faces is only capable through the artistic mind and eye of the photographer. We feel that certain things need to be seen. Not only seen but seen in a way they normally you wouldn't in passing. By doing that, hopefully, it will make you slow down and think a little bit longer about it and maybe what can you do. That's the Dark Cycle. Who knows, you could be subject matter just as easy as these people were.  In addition to the Dark Cycle book coming, which should be out later this Spring, we also have many other artistic styles of people, nature, and architecture.

The site primarily are photos by GE Koenig, but I have some of my own scattered about in there as well. I am no where near the level that GE Koenig is, but I can hold my own. Like the one below.

This one I took at the start of a blizzard on New Year's Eve weekend on the shores of Lake Superior. A great all American town called Two Harbors, MN. This is an old Lake runner from the 1920s I think that's now part of a historical site, dry docked, propped up for viewing off a parking lot.

This tropical one is probably my best and most popular shot ever. You can this one as a High Res Wallpaper off InterfaceLIFT it was also featured in an iPhone app. I think I am good, but I can't compete with the master. Although some of his techniques I taught him, with a booming career and small kids, time to get to the remote locations is hard to come by.

So head over to NorthWorks Photo and check it out. If you love a shot and want information on how you can get a copy or print, go ahead and email us and we'll make it happen for you. If you are interested in a copy of the Dark Cycle book, drop us a line and we will hold a copy for you.

More importantly, if you think someone you know will enjoy it, spread the word.

A note from GE Koenig from NorthWorks Photo:

This website has been constructed to showcase my work as well as that of my
son. I have been at this photo business from the days when the battle cry
was “You will need to pry the Kodachrome from cold dead hands,” to “You will
need to pry the Fujichrome…” well you get the point. From 35mm to 2 1/4 to 4x5
now to digital. I’ve been there, and have arrived at place in technology, which has
made photography fun once again, and within almost total control of the
photographer, i.e. digital.
At this point we have constructed a site to place our work in front of the
public, and eventually use as a tool to market it. However, prior to diving into all of
that I am finishing up a most satisfying, yet painfully touching series titled Dark
Cycle.
Working with and photographing the homeless, street people as actual people rather
than lumps of rags with a cardboard sign, has lead me to discover very diverse
reactions by them, and from society about where our country is today. From a land
of opportunity and dreams to that of hopelessness and despair.
My hope is that the Dark Cycle will be turned into a book with some proceeds
going to assist those in need.

As far as our other two galleries…like I said I hope they speak for themselves.

Thanks for looking
G.E. Koenig
