August 22, 2011 @Instagram Is Losing Its Soul

If you haven't noticed I am a photographer, or try to be. I use all forms and methods to capture life in a frame. One of those methods to get the photos into the eyes of many is an iPhone application called Instagram. Now, Instagram's initial intention was to allow you to take a photo with your iPhone, use Instagram's built in filters to add that unique flair to your shot and quickly post it to the social world. As you gain followers people like your photos, other see it, they like it and it spreads. That was Instagram's soul.... and they are losing it.

I will still use Instagram.... for now. To be honest, I use Instagram for the fast filters and because it's the best application to post to Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Picasa, Posterous, and Twitter at the same time. That's how I post my photos. Show me another photo app that has the posting capability and super easy built in filters and I will switch tomorrow. I haven't see one yet, but if Instagram continues to go down their road something soon will take its place.

What I am talking about is Instagram's cellphone start. The idea, or at least I think the idea, was to have cell phone photos as their core. However, this soul has been lost. As I browse through the photos on Instagram I see one huge flaw, many of the "top photos" are not taken with an iPhone. This is the downfall of the original intention of social photography on mobile devices it to be mobile. I saw one post about it that bascially said that it's Instagram, not Latergram.

As you browse through the pics and see which ones are top rated you will start to see that these photos are no way taken with an iPhone camera. They were pro shots loaded into Instagram after the fact. This is where the soul is lost. It's no longer comparisons and seeing mobile only photography but an exploit of people loading in whatever they want to get more recognition for their shots. That's fine for a self promotion but Instagram wasn't supposed to be like that. The soul is lost. I rarely scan through the photos anymore of people who are not on my friends list because it's gotten that bad. If I wanted to see a photo gallery of professional looking shots then I will goto Flickr or another photography gallery. Instagram is about taking a set of filters, a phone and posting cool and unique shots. Everyone is on the same playing field as to popularity and the only distinguishable difference is one's talent to capturing life.

It's sad but it is what it is. Instagram is very popular but it's soul has been lost. I will wait for the next version of the Instagram concept to be picked up by someone else and run with it.

End of Line.
