Are you a techie that has all the latest and greatest gadgets including the iPad but work in an office environment that does not allow personal devices on the WiFi? Do you try to self justify the cost by having it sit on your desk as a clock or photo frame? Expensive to use it so minimally isn't it.
I have the Wi-Fi iPad 2 and used to be in an office environment where there was a separate Wi-Fi network for employees to use devices on. At my new location there is none, but I have changed my use of my iPad and still use it every single day.
If you are in a job that requires you to use manuals, product docs, technical or business briefs, load them on to your iPad. Maximize your efficiency and use your tablet for the reader and your laptop for productivity. Switching between screens, especially if you are in any kind of IT position, takes time and clutters up your valuable screen real estate. Instead get a nice stand and load all your manuals, PDFs and reference material onto the disconnected iPad. There are two ways that you can get those files onto your iPad. I recommend that you use PDFs over HTML or Word Docs, those will work but PDFs are much easier to work with and most companies, vendors, and resources distribute PDFs anyway.
The first way is to use iTunes on your PC/Mac to load the PDFs. This is a cleaner method but requires you to sync up your iPad to iTunes on a desktop. In iTunes you simple import or drag and drop the PDFs into iTunes. Click on your iPad in iTunes, go to Books, and select to sync the files.
The other way is how I load them and I think it's easier. If the PDF is small enough to be emailed, just email the file to yourself. Open the email on your iPad, when you are connected to a WiFi network, and you will see the PDF attachment in the email. Tap on that and it will load it into iBooks and place it in the document section. Done.
The other advantage for using PDF manuals on the iPad is you can not only search but also bookmark for quick access later on.
Have one or two less windows to switch between when you are in the heat of the moment with a project will save you time, reduce mistakes and let you use your WiFi-less iPad or tablets productively.
End of Line.
