Every year I kick off with technology focused predictions for the fun of it. To throw out my insights and vision to the world to come, sometimes I am dead on other times I am dead wrong. 2012 was no different.
Before I release my 2013 predictions we need to go back through and see how I did for 2012. You can see the original post here that has detailed explanations for each prediction.
Since this is my blog it will be up to me how accurate I was for my predictions. You can comment if you think differently. I will rate my predictions on a scale that I just made up now - TRUE, FAIL, and So-So.
- Facebook will buy Yahoo - FAIL, nope this didn't happen. I thought Facebook would dive into the search engine realm to really take on Google. I still see this as the next logical evolution for Facebook but it didn't happen in 2012.
- Single Login/Account For the Internet - FAIL, SOPA faded away but this issue is still going to happen eventually I think. A single authenticator for accessing Internet services (which will be pretty much everything mainstream) is coming. It's cheaper, more secure, simpler to implement, and businesses will benefit from it.
- The WiiU will be a complete failure So-So, The new Nintendo system WiiU is now out and I call this prediction So-So. If you compare the Wiiu Launch to the Wii launch and you will see that the WiiU is not flying off the shelves and scarcely available as the Wii was months after it launched. I am a video game junkie and I will not be getting a WiiU.
- Amazon will have an epic failure with their Cloud - So-So, over Christmas Netflix had a two day outage that they blame on the Amazon Cloud being down. There have been other large name companies that have had outages directly related to Amazon's services. I wouldn't say they were epic failures, but I wonder how many companies didn't go into the Amazon cloud because of those public outages?
- Siri will be part of the next Apple OS - So-So, Siri, the voice control feature of the iOS, has begun to expand to other Apple devices but not fully yet. I use Siri for simple things but I don't rely on it. However I do see benefit from it if I had it on my iMac. They have dictation but moving from screen to screen, calling out open processes, that would be pretty slick.
- Apple TV will not use land line cable or satellite, Internet Only TRUE
- RIM continues its slow painful death into some equity purchase So-So, The maker of the Blackberry is slowly dying yes. Were they sold off? Not yet.
- Corporations realize that they are exposed, break out the checkbooks FAIL, This prediction is hard to prove one way or another and it depends on your point of view. Some companies did but over all they did not. The economy tanked harder than when this prediction list was originally written. When it comes to IT security spend the decision makers are still having a problem with conceptualizing the investment since most IT security implementations are invisible and therefore have an impression of non-value add. If I don't see a pretty application with pictures then it's not a worthy investment.
- The Cloud will be a consumer and small company service TRUE, This is true. Personal cloud services have exploded. Apple iCloud, Dropbox, cross device apps, etc... if you are mobile then you are using cloud services. Wide range adoption from a business perspective is slow to get going but the momentum is increasing.
- The World Will Not End On Dec. 21, 2012 TRUE, we made it.
Coming soon, Tech predictions for 2013.
End of Line
