If you watch the preview video below you can see it's just you going through the boards solving unique obstacle puzzles. As the game progresses the puzzles get more difficult and unique in their solutions to move on. But in the end, the puzzles are not that difficult. On average most of the obstacles can be solved pretty simply the first time you get to them, especially if you have every played a video game before, the solutions are generally the same. A few places take several attempts to get the timing right, but you know how to solve it.
That's one of the complaints I have about the game is that the puzzles were too easy. I am waiting for the game to introduce a random solution generator that will drive gamers insane trying to solve it and in a way that no one can hop on a message board and get the solution. I don't do that, I like to work for the solutions myself and never understood why people buy games only to walk through the problem solutions step by step. Anyway, because of the puzzle simplicity, the game is relatively short. You could get through it in 3 hours start to finish. Now, for 1200 points I would expect a little more play time vs. cost.
Limbo does have many secret achievements and you can get 111% completion, but once you go through it the first time, the appeal for that accomplishment is not that high for me and I'd rather go on to something else. That throws back to the points vs. content complaint.
For being a side scroller, Limbo is beautiful. Black and white with a very unique and creepy atmosphere. No music, great sound effects, and fantastic depth visually makes Limbo one of the better looking games I have played on the Arcade.
There are reviews all over the place for this game and I am not going to attempt to be a game reviewer to compete with those, but wanted to throw out my thoughts on it.
In hindsight I do regret getting Limbo for the cost vs. content. It was way too short and the puzzles, although visually stunning, were forms from the same video game puzzle formula. Had the puzzles been more challenging and the game longer, I would be inclined more to recommended it to people. But unless they drop the price to 800 points, where it should have been, or if you have points laying around then get Limbo without a doubt. Otherwise, there are other games out there that give you a little more bang for the buck.
I am very curious if they will be putting out a sequel or an add on for this version. I would think for the 1200 points they could throw out a bonus add on at no cost. I don't see how the game maker will get away with a paid Add On on top of the bloated price.
End of Line.
