"Grant us serenity to accept things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
- Reinhold Niebuhr
I love this quote. It's very relevant to the business world. No matter the job you have, this quote applies to you. Even though you may see area for improvement, only worry about it if you can change it.
This is what makes you successful and less stressful in life. By accepting the things that are out of your control, you can focus on the things you can. International crisis. Be knowledgeable about it, but don't try to change it unless you are in a position to do so. Too big? If you see your executive management making decisions that you know to be wrong or a better way to do it? Why try to change that? You can't. Trying to will put your sanity and career at risk.
So, instead work your way into positions where you can make those kind of changes. How do you do that? By getting the courage to change the things that are in your circle of influence. You direct job, your family, your finances. All within your total control, but not unless you have the courage to change it. It is very important to have the courage because courage will help you deal with failure. With all attempts of almost everything, there will be failure. Failure builds wisdom.
Thomas Edison said that he didn't have 270+ failures when he made the first lightbulb, he just found 270+ ways not to make one. Taking failures into wisdom toward changing things that you can.
In the midst of a world of problems, don't boil the ocean. You will kill yourself with stress and discouragement if you try. Change the things you can. Focus on conquering what is around you. Opportunities will present themselves when you do that. Those opportunities will then put a different set of challenges around you to tackle. Conquer those and move through life, career, family this way and you will succeed in everything.
Trying to take the shots that you have no chance of hitting from where you are sitting is a waste of energy. Instead work on getting a better seat.
End of Line.
